County commissioners' panel discovers funding shortage
Veterans Services Office operates on $263,000
Targets First Health to expand vets' mental health care
The Moore County Board of Commissioners’ veterans sub-committee formed under chair Nick Picerno is making strides to become more proactive. According to commissioner Jim Von Canon, the Veterans Services Office is vastly underfunded, operating on a shoestring budget of less than $260,000 per year.
The commissioners also are calling on FirstHealth’s massive hospital system to increase beds for veterans enduring mental health issues. Currently, fewer than 30 beds are available at any one time.
